Importer Exporter Code (IEC Code)

Importer Exporter Code (IEC Code) is a 10 digit registration number issued by Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). IEC code has lifetime validity. IEC code is required to start the business of import or export of goods or services. Further IEC code is mandatorily required to claim benefits under export incentive schemes such Merchandise Exports from India Scheme (MEIS) and Services Exports from India Scheme (SEIS).

Earlier DGFT used to issue a separate 10 digit identification number for IEC code, but now PAN number is issued as IEC code. However, to use the PAN number as IEC code, it is necessary to register it with DGFT.

FAQ On IEC Code Registration

IEC stand for Importer Exporter Code also popularly known as Import Export Code. IEC is a PAN based identification number issued by Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).

IEC Code is required to start the business of import or export of goods or services. As per Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) no person or entity shall make any import or export without IEC number.

Any individual, firm, company or entity, who wants to do business in international market, can apply for IEC code registration.

IEC code is mandatory for entities, which are engaged in the business of import or export of goods. Service exporter can export their services without taking IEC code. However to claim benefits under export benefits schemes such as MEIS & SEIS, IEC code is mandatory.

An import export code has lifetime validity. However it is mandatory to update IEC code annually so that it is not deactivated.

IEC code is required to be updated annually between April to June every year.  In case it is not updated with the prescribed time limits, it will be deactivated.
